Be a Mentor

As a mentor you experience an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those you mentor. You may be surprised to discover mentoring is by no means a one-way street. We find our mentors say they get as much out of each session as the boys and girls they mentor.

As you connect, listen, and share with the group, and they with you, you demonstrate the true value of being heard, acknowledged, and respected. Through this engagement, both derive “sustenance and strength from the relationship.” The connection you build by mentoring works in both directions.

As a mentor you will experience the REAL Method. REAL is an acronym for the four pillars of The REAL Mentors Program: Respect, Engage, Acknowledge, and Listen. Each pillar builds on the other to deepen, strengthen, and smooth the way for honest and real connection.

You’ll discover hearing and listening are not the same thing. When we learn to listen with an open and non-judgmental heart to the words, to the feelings, what’s said and left unsaid by those we mentor, it… allows us to understand, empathize, and relate at a deeper level.

In our meetings, boys, girls, and mentors are welcome to say ‘what’s there for them, express what’s on their mind, and what they may be carrying around that’s weighing them down’. Once we allow ourselves to open up to any frustration, pain, fear, or anger we may be experiencing, then we create the space to show our greatness and our strength. That openness grants us the ability to grow, mature, and thrive.

After all, we are all mentors… it’s just that most of us haven’t realized it yet.

If you would like to be a part of this grand adventure, we welcome you to come and sit in on several meetings. This will give you a chance to get to know us, experience what we do, and see if it is good a fit.

Meetings are held after school from 2:30 to 4:30 one day a week, throughout the school year.
